Our Story
Hindleys has been supplying makers, designers, educators and industry for more than 125 years.
Our story began in Sheffield in 1896, when Joseph Brierley Hindley established the business as a tool merchant, supplying fretwork designs and cabinet-making tools to craftsmen and industries across Sheffield and Yorkshire. As the business grew, other members of the Hindley family became involved and the company continued to evolve.
In 1975, Hindleys was purchased by Michael Henry, whose own family had strong roots in Sheffield’s steel industry. Passionate about Sheffield-made tools and traditional craftsmanship, Michael was determined to preserve the business and build on its heritage.
A chance enquiry from a local teacher asking whether Hindleys could supply Perspex® to a Sheffield school marked the beginning of a new chapter. From that single request came a catalogue, an expanding range of materials and the foundations of the Hindleys you see today.
Hindleys has grown into a leading supplier of acrylic, plastics and creative materials to designers, education and industry across the UK and around the world.
More than a century after Joseph Brierley Hindley first opened his doors, we remain proud of our Sheffield heritage while continuing to develop new products, materials and ideas for the next generation of makers.
